Council District 3 Youth Leadership Program

In September of 2011, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis P. Zine and Council District 3 invited select high school-age students from throughout Council District 3 and its' respective communities to take part in a one-of-a-kind learning experience for all involved, the Democracy by D-Zine Youth Leadership Program.

Grounded in research-based concepts like service learning and character education, the Democracy by D-Zine Youth Leadership Program empowers the student participants to learn about all aspects of public service and advocacy from those who live and breathe it every day: the staff and key constituencies of CD3 and the City of Los Angeles. It is also the expectation that the Democracy by D-Zine leaders will take their newfound knowledge and expertise back to their schools and communities and to make a difference in whatever way they see fit. In short, the Democracy by D-Zine Program is a year-long service learning project for youth with the goal of preparing them for post-secondary careers in public service and politics.

The motto of the program is: If not Here, Where? If Not Me, Who? If Not Now, When? The program is built upon the premise that service to others not only gives substance and meaning to one's life, but also serves as the backbone of our wonderful democracy. Ever since the inspiring words of John F. Kennedy challenged us to "ask not what your country can do for you; but rather what you can do for your country," the importance of rising above our own circumstances and helping others has been at the forefront of our national consciousness. During their monthly meetings, several of the key themes explored are: character, calling, communication, leadership, diversity, service, and building positive relationships.

Some of the highlights of the Democracy by D-Zine Program are:

- Interactive methodology that fosters personal growth and efficacy

- Guest speakers from all levels of government and public service

- Trips to venues around Los Angeles such as the Museum of Tolerance and City Hall

- Cutting edge training in professional etiquette, organizational development, and culture building

- Opportunities to attend and support District and City events with Councilman Zine and CD3 staff
